What is Memory and types of Memory | Internal or External Memory

What is Memory and Types of Memory?

Memory: Computer memory is any physical device capable of storing information temporarily or permanently.

Memory is a part of a computer where data, instructions, and information are stored. Just like humans use memory to remember things, a computer also uses memory to store and remember data while it works. It helps the computer perform tasks quickly and efficiently.

Memory is very important because without it, the computer cannot run programs, open files, or perform any operation.

Example: Random Access Memory (RAM) is a Volatile Memory that stores information's on a integrated circuit used by the operating system, software and hardware.

There are two main types of memory.

1) Volatile Memory

2) Non-Volatile Memory

Volatile Memory: Volatile Memory is a memory that Losses its contents when the computer or hardware devices losses power. computer RAM is an Example of Volatile Memory.

Non-Volatile Memory: Your Computer Computer Freezes or Reboots when working on a program, you can lose anything that hasn't been saved. Non-Volatile Memory, that keeps its contents even if the power is lost. ROM is an Example of Non-Volatile Memory.

There are two types Memory:

1) Internal Memory (Primary Memory)    2) Secondary Memory (External Memory)

Internal Memory (Primary Memory):

Small bits of data are stored in internal memory, sometimes referred to as primary memory, which the computer can access while it is being used. To be used, internal memory must be directly connected to the device; it is made up of chips that are attached to the motherboard.

Example: RAM, ROM.

Secondary Memory (External Memory)

External memory is memory that helps people remember concepts and feelings by using clues from their surroundings. An external memory aid is something that someone employs in addition to their own internal memory tricks, abilities, or talents to help them recall specific items, events, or even tasks.

Example: HDD, CD, SDD, USB (Pendrive).

Types of Memory in a Computer:

There are mainly two types of memory:

1. Primary Memory (Main Memory)
This memory is directly used by the computer while it is working. It is fast but temporary.

a. RAM (Random Access Memory)

* RAM stores data and programs that are being used right now.
* It is temporary, meaning data is lost when the computer is turned off.
* More RAM means a faster computer.

b. ROM (Read-Only Memory)

* ROM stores important instructions needed to start the computer.
* It is permanent, and the data stays even when the computer is off.
* Users cannot change or delete ROM content easily.

2. Secondary Memory (Storage Memory)

This memory is used to store data permanently. It keeps data even when the computer is turned off.
Examples:
* Hard Disk Drive (HDD) – Stores operating system, files, programs.
* Solid State Drive (SSD) – Faster than HDD and used in modern computers.
* Pen Drive / USB Drive – Portable memory for storing and moving data.
* CD/DVD – Used for storing music, videos, and files.
* Memory Card – Used in mobiles and cameras.
